Provbana – EPS conformance and interoperability testing platform
Provbana – demo/video – gives you an idea of what it can do
Provbana is a FHIR testing platform built for the Nordic Hackathon 2026 and its European Patient Summary track. It gives every participating organisation one environment to test conformance, exchange documents, and measure progress, in line with the EHDS requirements for cross-border patient summaries.
Documents using the official HL7 FHIR validator, against the HL7 Europe EPS guide and the HL7 Sweden base profiles. The other EHDS priority categories (laboratory reports, ePrescription and eDispensation, and imaging reports) are validated against their own HL7 Europe guides. Results are scored automatically and shown on a live leaderboard.
Provbana also facilitates interoperability testing between participants. Each organisation publishes its validated documents to a shared exchange, retrieves its partners’ documents into its own system, and records how they were displayed, so every successful exchange is visible to all.
Clinicians taking part do not need any FHIR knowledge. Every submitted patient summary can be viewed in Provbana as a readable clinical summary, and each partner’s screenshots show how the same document looks in different systems. This lets clinicians judge whether the information that matters for patient care survives the journey between systems.
Provbana is open now for pre-event testing, with synthetic reference patients for both hackathon scenarios.
This hackathon uses FHIR R4 for the following reason.
The European Patient Summary only exists in R4. HL7 Europe publishes a few of its guides in both R4 and R5 (base profiles, medication, imaging), but the patient summary, lab and discharge report guides are R4 only. So is the International Patient Summary that the EPS is built on. The EU hasn’t picked a FHIR version for EHDS yet – that comes with the implementing act due by March 2027. In the meantime MyHealth@EU’s FHIR work is R4 as well.
